Kahuna Bob Edwards

     Bob, who is arguably the premier surfing Instructor along the Southern California coast, began surfing in Miami Beach, Florida back in 1963. What sets him head and shoulders above all the others is not the fact that he is an expert performer on all the different types of surfboards and wave conditions nor is it his expert knowledge of swells, currents, reefs, varying surf breaks and ocean conditions. What makes Kahuna Bob the very best is his ability to interact with, communicate to and understand his diverse students abilities, dreams, hopes, concerns, and still teach and send each and everyone away with an incredible surfing experience that leaves them wanting more. You can find Bob featured in Surfology 101, the first interactive CD-ROM on Surfing, giving the basic surfing lesson. He has been instructing students from four to sixty-seven along the Southern California beaches for the past twenty years as well as being the surfing instructor at the prestigious Hotel Del Coronado for the last five years. In 1990 and 1991 Bob coached the UCSD Surf Team to the State and National Championships and he currently coaches he Valley Middle School in Carlsbad, Ca…known as the VIKINGS SURF TEAM. Kahuna Bob has been one of the top male tandem surfers in the world. He has enjoyed being ranked in the top ten teams for tandem surfing, with his now retired former partner, Wendy Lynn. Bob is currently looking for a new tandem partner. If you are female, weigh between 95 and 105 lbs., maybe have a feel for the spot light and interested in an incredibly exhilarating experience, maybe you ought to give it a try.  A bit of athleticism, balance or gymnastics would certainly be cool but not a criteria and although surfing experience is absolutely not necessary it wouldn't hurt either.      As former Environmental Director of the Oceanside Long board Surfing Club, Bob did address local water quality issues and worked hand in hand with the Surfrider Foundation, and other local environmental organizations to keep our beaches healthy and safe for all to enjoy now and for years to come.  Bob and his wife Peggy have been Contest Directors for the Solana Beach Surf Festival for the past three years and for the last eight years have organized and run the Rob Machado Surf Classics at Cardiff by the Sea. Bob is the Southern California rep for the Hawaiian Surf Clothing line and is the California team captain for Hawaiian Surf.  Bob has traveled all over the surfing world and has surfed and been part of all the surfboard design changes from the 10 foot logs to the 5'8" fish and back to the new long board resurgence.  No matter what your age or experience level no one will give you a better surfing adventure than Kahuna Bob.

Peggy Edwards     Peggy Edwards, wife of Kahuna Bob, has been very helpful in the business operations of Kahuna Bob's Surf School.  A graduate of Cal State Fullerton with a degree in teaching and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, Peggy has been able to help with the family business in various ways.  Keeping the younger surfers comfortable in the ocean is a skill in itself, with Peggy's experience as a credentialed swim instructor she has proven to be an added bonus to the program.   Her other daily duties include class scheduling, sales, equipment inventories, finances, manning the phones, email and basically running the back end of the entire operation.  Peggy keeps the company personal abreast of when and where classes will be held, how many students will be participating, class skill levels or any special needs associated with potential participants. She is quick to react to changes that come up involving weather, ocean conditions or last minute student or class problems that that arise on a daily basis.
      Besides helping run the business, Peggy is an active volunteer in her son's academic school P.T.O. program.  Somewhere in her busy day she has also found the time to help coach  her son Rusty's baseball team.  By being a crucial factor in the family business, Peggy has the benefit of a flexible schedule, which has allowed son Rusty to excel in his numerous extracurricular activities. 

 

 

Rusty Edwards     Rusty is already one of the top surfers for his age group in California with seven Menehune contest victories under his belt. His favorite maneuvers on his long board are nose riding and switching stance while on his short board it's late take offs and tube riding. Experienced beyond his years Rusty has surfed Hull Bay in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, South Point in Barbados, Kammiland, Chuns Reef and Big Drops on the north shore of Oahu. Rusty also helps his dad each Christmas season with their surf camp in Punta Mita, Nayarit Mexico where he flirts and shows off for the clients daughters.
 
Rusty is now 15 years old and a sophomore at El Camino High School and has currently dropped his baseball career to focus all his effort and concentration on his skate, snow and surfboarding sport talents. He is currently ranked  second overall in the High School LONG BOARD DIVISION in San Diego County. With all his travels the kid's got more frequent flyer miles than most CEO's.
